San Bruno: Driver charged after flight from police ends in fatal crash

Posted on June 23, 2022 by

A San Francisco man was charged in connection to a fatal hit-and-run collision earlier in June that happened while he was fleeing from a police officer and driving under the influence, according to the San Mateo District Attorney’s Office.

Matthew Todd Fredricksen, 34, was charged June 22 in the June 19 crash, which killed Mikhail Maalouli, 59. Fredricksen faces counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence of a drug causing injury, inflicting great bodily injury, hit and run driving resulting in death or serious injury, receiving a stolen motor vehicle and fleeing a pursuing peace officer’s motor vehicle causing death, all felonies. Fredericksen was also charged with possession of a controlled substance and receiving stolen property with a value not exceeding $950, both misdemeanors.

About 10 p.m. June 19, a man shoplifted merchandise from Tanforan Center in San Bruno and got into a stolen 2012 Toyota Highlander waiting outside the store with Fredericksen in the driver’s seat, according to the San Bruno Police Department. A police officer tried to pull the car over but Fredericksen fled at a high speed.

The officer stopped the chase; Fredericksen drove through the stoplight at San Bruno Avenue and T-boned a vehicle being driven by Maalouli, killing him, authorities said. Fredericksen then ran from the scene of the crash but was taken into custody. He had fentanyl and meth in his possession and appeared to be under the influence of fentanyl, authorities said.

A man and a woman, who were passengers in the vehicle being driven by Maalouli, had minor injuries as a result of the crash, authorities said.
